Last Call Before You Stop the Haul!

Memorial Day is quickly approaching and along with the holiday comes an important deadline for people removing ash trees. After Monday, May 27, 2019, the cutting of ash trees is not recommended and hauling of ash wood and debris is prohibited by ordinance within the city of Sioux Falls. The restriction on transport of ash wood will remain in place until after Labor Day, which falls on Monday, September 2, 2019.

This restriction, put in place as part of the City of Sioux Falls Emerald Ash Borer Response Plan, is designed to help slow the spread of the emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation.

While the initial EAB infestation was detected in northern Sioux Falls, a very small satellite infestation was recently discovered in the area of 37th Street and Minnesota Avenue. The location of this new infestation reinforces concern about the citywide spread of EAB and underscores the need to restrict movement of ash wood and debris to slow that spread.

State quarantine prohibits the movement of ash products and all hardwood firewood year-round from the quarantine area. For questions regarding the state quarantine, call 605-773-3796 or visit emeraldashborerinsouthdakota.sd.gov.
