Department: Public Works-Engineering

Specific Responsibilities Include:

This Engineering Intern will be involved in a variety of engineering related activities performed in support of design, construction, or maintenance of City of Sioux Falls’ public infrastructure.  This person will be working with the following areas within Engineering:  Streets, Traffic, Drainage/Storm Water, Sanitary Sewer, Water, Lighting, Project Construction, and Subdivision Construction.  This individual will be assigned a research or field project in engineering to study and provide a recommendation for implement moving forward for our division.

Qualifications Required:

Applicants enrolled in an engineering curriculum as a full-time student at a college, university or vocational-technical school for the fall 2020 semester preferred.

Department: Parks and Recreation

Specific Responsibilities Include:

Aid in the planning and design of future parks & recreation development projects: Examples of tasks may include:

  • Inventory and analysis of existing park facilities.
  • Gathering of stakeholder and park user input.
  • Park site observations and reporting.
  • Notation of usage patterns, opportunities, and constraints.
  • Preliminary park & trail planning
  • Schematic park & trail design
  • Research into national/regional trends for the purpose of discovering and vetting future park elements and programming opportunities.
  • Construction observation of parks and trail construction projects.
  • Complete reports, evaluations, and documentation of various park development initiatives.

Qualifications Required:

Recent graduate or currently enrolled in an accredited landscape architecture program.

Must have an interest in the design of parks, public spaces, trails, and multi-use recreational facilities. 

Must have basic understanding of landscape architecture design principles, including land use planning, recreational programming, site design, and master planning.

Must have strong research and analytical skills. Proficiency or exposure to Adobe design software, ArcGIS, Autocad is preferred.

Ability to work as a team member and collaborate effectively with others.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, including creation of project reports and public speaking.

Provide assistance with various urban forest management activities, which may include, but not limited to:  inventory updates, marking trees for removal, coordinating with homeowners and performing site inspections.

Work closely with City of Sioux Falls contractors removing street trees to monitor progress and inspect work for quality assurance.

Assist with the City of Sioux Falls planting permit program performing initial site inspections and re-inspecting planted sites.

Contribute to the City of Sioux Falls forestry website providing review and feedback of page content and assisting with the development of updates to the website and various PDF publications. 

Assist with community events, public education and outreach pertaining to Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), tree planting and urban forest management.

Assisting Parks and Recreation Division staff with day-to-day operations within the office and other duties as assigned.

Students enrolled in a forestry, arboriculture, natural resources management, horticulture, landscape design, agriculture or closely related curriculum as a full-time student at a college, university, or vocational technical school.
