41st Street Diverging Diamond Interchange

Project Update 5/16/2022  

41st Street, Marion Road to Shirley Avenue

  • The storm drainage pipe is installed along 41st Street up to Marion Road. Junction boxes and inlets are being constructed moving west along 41st Street. 
  • The private utilities at 41st Street and Gateway Boulevard have been relocated; the intersection is expected to be reopened during the week of May 16. 
  • Crews will begin grading starting on the east side of the construction area and moving west through the intersections at Gateway Boulevard, Terry Avenue and Cathy Avenue.
  • This work includes grading and placing gravel, sand, and other materials for the road bed in preparation for the new pavement.
  • Storm sewer installation along the east side of Marion Road is underway.
  • This work is expected to be completed the week of May 23.
  • Water main and sanitary sewer installation along Marion Road will also take place over the next couple of weeks.

Commuter Route Information: 

  • Marion Road is closed between 41st Street and 44th Street through the end of May.
  • Residents and businesses will continue to have local access using 44th Street and Larch Avenue.
  • Motorists traveling through this area should utilize Sertoma Avenue or Louise Avenue as alternate routes. 
  • The eastbound lanes of 41st Street are closed between I-29 and Marion Road.  
  • One lane of traffic in each direction is being maintained in the westbound lanes.  
  • The outside right turn lane on the southbound Interstate 29 off-ramp onto 41st Street is closed. 
  • Intermittent intersection closures will continue through the end of May as crews install underground utilities through the intersections.
  • Temporary closures at Gateway Boulevard, Terry Avenue and Cathy Avenue will alternate so that only one intersection is closed at a time.
  • Please follow the posted signs around the closures. 
  • Drivers are urged to use caution and reduce their speed while travelling through the construction area and consider using alternate routes.

Project Summary:

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) and the City of Sioux Falls are working together to reconstruct the interchange at 41st Street and I-29 into a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). 41st Street will also be reconstructed from Marion Road to Shirley Avenue as part of this project.  41st Street will be reconstructed and widened to include three lanes in each direction with a raised center median.  Underground utility replacement will also be included as part of the reconstruction work on 41st Street. Portions of Marion Road and Shirley Avenue will be reconstructed and widened with this project as well.

Construction will begin in early 2022 west of I-29. In 2023, construction will be focused on the I29 interchange and east to Shirley Avenue.
