MAP AND COMPASS TREASURE HUNTERS

AGES: 6–12

Will you be able to find the hidden treasure? Through this fun-filled treasure hunting adventure, participants will learn the basics of using a map and compass. Studies have shown that children who understand how to read maps have an increased level of spatial thinking, which is an important problem solving skill. All supplies provided. Please wear closed toed shoes and bring a water bottle. Registration required.

KIDZ AQUA FITNESS

MIDCO® AQUATIC CENTER | AGES: 8+

Come see what all the fuss is about with water exercise. Don’t let the adults have all the fun, come join this class to learn all the great water moves. Let the fun music be your motivation as we move through the resistance of the water. We use noodles and dummies for buoyance, so proficiency at swimming is not a requirement. Registration required.

SUMMER DEVELOPMENTAL TRACK MEETS

LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL TRACK | AGES: 2-19

Co-sponsored by First PREMIER Bank and BankCard. Children of all ages can participate in numerous track and field events. It’s a fun way to participate with others and test out your track skills. Field events begin at 5:45 p.m. and running events begin at 6 p.m. Registration will begin on site at 5 p.m.

YOUTH FISHING

WEST COVELL LAKE | AGES: 4-17

Today’s families often have limited opportunities to connect with the natural environment through outdoor experiences. Fishing in your local parks is a perfect way to combat this statistic. We’ll provide the bait, fishing poles, and instruction on a first–come, first–served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a five–to–one ratio of children to adults must be observed. Participants ages 16 and above must have a valid South Dakota fishing license. No registration required.

CHILDREN’S OPERA CAMP

AGES: 8–15

Fairytale Opera Camp, gives your child the chance to learn more about singing and acting from real working professional singers. During this 3-day camp, kids can learn the music and choreography for the Little Piggy Chorus in a Fairytale Opera version of The Three Little Pigs by John Davies. Then when performance time comes, they can be part of the show!

ARCHERY IN THE PARKS

Archery in the Parks

AGES: 7-12

The Outdoor Campus and Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation will be providing an opportunity for youth to explore the sport of archery in a safe and encouraging environment. During this activity, youth will be introduced to the basics of a sport that many individuals enjoy well into adulthood. Participation is free and all necessary supplies will be provided on a first–come, first–served basis. No registration required.

Improve your basketball skills over the summer at our two-day skills clinic. Work on dribbling, passing, and shooting with daily drills. We will end each day with contests. Leave with things you can continue working on to make you a better player next season. Registration required.

YOUTH TRIATHLON TRAINING

KUEHN PARK/POOL | AGES: 6-18

If you are planning on competing in the Youth Triathlon, or just want to learn what it’s all about, this is for you. Practice your swimming, biking, and running skills while getting tips on how to improve. Sioux Falls Swim Team and ERIK’s Bike Shop will be on-site to assist with training. Bring your swimsuit, towel, bike, helmet, and running shoes each day. Tuesday’s class will focus on swimming and practice transitioning to bike. Wednesday’s class will focus on bike etiquette, riding the bike route, and transitioning to the run. ERIK’s Bike Shop will be at the training on Wednesday to help with free basic bike fits and bike safety checks. Thursday’s class will focus on transitioning from the bike and running the race route. YOUTH TRIATHLON

Presented by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Swim, bike, and run in this fun mini triathlon.

Registration: Register by July 31 to receive a T–shirt. Early registration fee is $10 through July 31. August 9 (race day), the registration fee is $15.

9 a.m. is packet pickup, all participants must be there by this time!

Make sure to stick around for the awards ceremony! Coke will have a drawing to win a bike for registered participants. Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each division and a drawing will be held for a $250 gift certificate from ERIK’s Bike Shop. ERIK’s Bike Shop will be on-site to provide bike checks, minor tuning, and tire inflation prior to the race. Each preregistered participant will be provided with a ERIK’s Bike Shop water bottle and a $10 gift certificate. Bring your swimsuit, towel, bike, helmet, and running shoes. Vehicle parking and access: Use Kuehn pool lot entrance to drop off participant and equipment. Kuehn pool lot will be ADA parking only. Use Sioux Falls First Church lot at 41st Street and Kuehn Park Road or Kuehn Community Center lot at 2801 South Valley View Road. No parking in the Kuehn golf course parking lot!

Bike Decorating

What better way to be involved with the Independence Day Celebration, than by having your very own decorated bike to ride in the parade! You bring the bike or scooter, we will provide the decorations. Then, join us on July 4 and march in the Independence Day Celebration parade. We will even store your decorated item until the day of the event. Stick around after the parade for all the fun festivities at Falls Park. Registration required.

The Sioux Falls Area Running Club, along with SFPR and Runner’s Block, will host three kids cross–country meets this fall. The three– race cross–country series is for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. All meets will take place at Morningside Park at 33rd Street and Bahnson Avenue in Sioux Falls, next to Harvey Dunn Elementary School. Walk up registration begins at 4 p.m., with races beginning at 4:30 p.m.

ADAPTIVE AQUATICS

ADAPTIVE—ENCOURAGED FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS LAUREL OAK FAMILY AQUATIC CENTER

SFPR and Sanford Wellness Center are happy to announce an adaptive aquatics program for children with special needs. The goal of this program is to provide students with a structured aquatic experience designed to make them feel comfortable and safe while swimming. Carole Wolf, a S.D.-certified teacher with a master’s degree in adaptive aquatics, will be conducting the classes. Classes will be a one-to-one student-to-instructor ratio for a 30-minute lesson.
