NATIONAL KIDS TO THE PARK DAY FISHATHON

Fishathon

What better way to kick off the summer fishing season than with a fishathon! Prizes will be awarded to youth participants under the age of 16 for the largest fish, smallest fish, and the most fish caught! Participants ages 16+ that plan to fish must have a valid S.D. fishing license.

Whether you already enjoy fishing, or would like to learn how to fish, this program is for you! Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation will provide all of the necessary equipment for you and your family to have an enjoyable evening of fishing. Poles and bait will be available on a first come, first-served basis. Individuals 16 years of age and older must have a valid South Dakota fishing license.

Wild Wednesdays

Explorers

ARROWHEAD PARK | AGES: 2–5

Each date will be based around a different nature theme. Classes will include a story, craft, and a scavenger hunt walk in nature. Parent participation is required. Please meet near the upper parking lot at the historic barn picnic area.

FAMILY PARK FISHING SATURDAYS

FAMILY PARK | #170077 | ALL AGES

Join us Saturday mornings in June and July for fishing at Family Park. Fishing poles and bait will be supplied on a first–come, first–served basis for you to enjoy a morning of fishing. This program is a joint project of S.D. Game Fish & Parks, The Outdoor Campus, and SFPR.

ORIENTEERING 101

ARROWHEAD PARK | AGES: 12+

Cell phones can be very useful in helping you find your way if you are lost, but would you know how to navigate without one? The ability to use a map and compass can be extremely helpful if you find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings. After an introductory lesson to map reading skills and compass use, participants will test their skills on a preset self-guided orienteering course using nothing but a map and compass to find their way. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

MAP AND COMPASS TREASURE HUNTERS

ARROWHEAD PARK | AGES: 6-12

Will you be able to find the hidden treasure? Through this fun-filled treasure hunting adventure, participants will learn the basics of using a map and compass. Studies have shown that children who understand how to read maps have an increased level of spatial thinking, which is an important problem solving skill. All supplies provided. Please wear closed toed shoes and bring a water bottle.

YOUTH FISHING

WEST COVELL LAKE | AGES: 4-17

Today’s families often have limited opportunities to connect with the natural environment through outdoor experiences. Fishing in your local parks is a perfect way to combat this statistic. We’ll provide the bait, fishing poles, and instruction on a first–come, first–served basis. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a five–to–one ratio of children to adults must be observed. Participants ages 16 and above must have a valid South Dakota fishing license.

ARCHERY IN THE PARKS

AGES: 7-12

The Outdoor Campus and Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation will be providing an opportunity for youth to explore the sport of archery in a safe and encouraging environment. During this activity, youth will be introduced to the basics of a sport that many individuals enjoy well into adulthood. Participation is free and all necessary supplies will be provided on a first–come, first–served basis.

KAYAK CLINIC

Are you interested in kayaking? This class is for beginners looking to learn and experience kayaking in a safe and fun environment. The professionals from the Canoe and Kayak association will be bringing their expertise to you at the Frank Olson Pool.

SUMMER SOLSTICE HIKE 

GREAT BEAR RECREATION PARK | AGES: 6+ 

Celebrate the longest day of the year by partaking in a hike in one of Sioux Falls’ most beautiful parks. Hiking not only provides the physical relief of other exercise choices, hiking in nature has been shown to be a powerful anxiety and stress reliever for people of all ages. Bring sturdy shoes and an adventurous spirit to partake in this summer solstice hike. Must be able to hike one mile on rocky and sometimes uneven terrain.

FULL MOON HIKE 

GREAT BEAR RECREATION PARK | AGES: 6+ 

Come out and see Great Bear under the full Buck moon’s glow! Hiking not only provides the physical relief of other exercise choices, but hiking in nature has been shown to be a powerful anxiety and stress reliever for people of all ages. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Participants must be able to hike one mile on uneven terrain. Please wear sturdy shoes.

STORYTIME TRAIL

Children will explore the nature around them as they partake in a storytime hike through Arrowhead Park and complete a nature craft. Your child will further develop their powers of observation and creativity while exploring a natural environment.

Fishing is a great way for a child to feel connected to nature while exercising essential motor skills. After reading a fish story and creating a craft, participants will learn to fish at Family Park Lake. All equipment will be provided. Parent participation is required.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

RIVERDALE PARK | AGES: 18+

Learn how to incorporate natural solutions while playing, camping, or adventuring in the great outdoors! Essential oils are a great option for bug repellent, seasonal threats, bug bite relief, sunburn relief, and to keep your body cool on those hot and humid sunny days.
