Structure Fire—4000 South Louise Avenue

On March 25, 2018, Sunday morning at 4:35 a.m., Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a report of a fire alarm at a multifamily apartment complex at 4000 South Louise Avenue. Prior to the arrival of fire crews, the fire was extinguished by a resident with a fire extinguisher. The first-arriving crew entered and encountered a significant amount of smoke on all levels. Crews evacuated the building and confirmed there were no occupants either injured or in need of assistance. There were no injuries to civilians or fire responders.

The building sustained a small amount of fire and smoke damage in the stairwell area. It was determined that a telephone book was placed under a step in the stairwell and started on fire.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with six fire trucks, two support vehicles, and 26 firefighters. Assistance was provided by Metro Communications, Sioux Falls Police Department, and Paramedics Plus.

The apartment complex did have a smoke/fire alarm system that activated and alerted residents to evacuate. The alarm system minimized potential injuries to the occupants.
