2018 Sustainability Community Nonprofit Grant Program Recipients Announced

The Sustainability Community Nonprofit Grant Program is a Public Works initiative designed to encourage nonprofit organizations to apply for funding for projects that help to meet the goals within the City’s Sustainability Master Plan. Goals include waste minimization, water resources, energy, transportation, built and natural environment, and community vitality.

The City received two applications and has elected to fund a portion of each applicant’s request. Program funding is $10,000. The following nonprofits have been awarded grant dollars:

• Furniture Mission of South Dakota will receive funding of $5,500. This amount will help provide 40 families with furniture that has been refurbished, repurposed, cleaned, and delivered. Because the Furniture Mission repurposes and restores furniture that has been donated by the community, they help keep more than 400,000 pounds of waste out of the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill each year. This includes bedding, lamps, pots and pans, dishes, and furniture to community members in need, which, in turn, provides a safe and healthy home environment.

• Ecomaniacs Summer Program will receive funding of $4,500. This amount will provide funding to allow Ecomaniacs to service Hot Harley Nights and JazzFest in 2018. Ecomaniacs donates dollars to other area not-for-profit organizations to provide litter cleanup and recycling services at summer events. They also provide hands-on recycling education to event attendees. Over the past four years, Ecomaniacs has recycled more than 30,000 pounds of material at these two events alone.

“The Sustainability Community Nonprofit Grant Program allows us to expand our reach throughout the community by partnering with other organizations with common goals to make Sioux Falls a sustainable place to live, work, and play. We’re happy to partner with these excellent agencies to help them continue their mission in Sioux Falls and hope to continue this program each year,” says Sustainability Coordinator Jessica Sexe.
