Fatal Accident Investigation

At approximately 2:30 a.m. on April 1, 2018, Metro Communications received a 911 call from a subject who said that he had been in an accident and was unsure of where he was at. He was able to give enough information to lead officers to his location. He was eventually located under the 49th Street Bridge that crosses the Big Sioux River near 49th Street and Kiwanis Avenue.

The subject was lying next to a car that had been involved in a single-car accident. The subject, an adult male, was able to tell responding officers that he had been a passenger in the car at the time of the accident. The vehicle was also occupied by the driver. The driver was an adult male who was deceased inside the car. The preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle had been heading east on 49th Street when it lost control and struck—head on—the pedestrian guard rail on the northwest end of the bridge. The vehicle then traveled down the embankment of a flood control levee and came to rest near the bike path under the 49th Street Bridge. Speed was a contributing factor in the crash.

The passenger was transported to the hospital with severe, but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver’s name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin. The investigation into the contributing factors of the accident is still on-going.
