Downtown Bus Depot Grand Reopening and Free Bus Rides on Monday

Join Sioux Area Metro and the City of Sioux Falls for a grand reopening to celebrate the major reconstruction of the new Downtown Bus Depot at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 13, 2017. The event will take place at the Depot located at 120 East 11th Street.

To celebrate the renovated Depot, all rides on Sioux Area Metro’s fixed route buses will be free all day on Monday, November 13, to allow people to see the great transportation services provided by Sioux Area Metro throughout Sioux Falls. Eleven transit routes are served by the Downtown Bus Depot, and Sioux Area Metro encourages people to come downtown and see the Depot improvements. Grand reopening activities will also include comments from Mayor Mike Huether, a drawing for four 30-day bus passes, tours of the Depot and canopy area, and light refreshments.

The reconstruction of the Downtown Bus Depot included a new canopy with an aluminum-framed central skylight to provide daylight and improve the waiting environment. Platform improvements provide for primary walking surfaces below the canopy area and incorporate features such as guided pathways for those with visual impairments, new bench seating, new bicycle storage racks and repair station, and refinished columns.

To complement the canopy renovations, the Depot building’s south wall, entry doors, and exterior signage were also reconstructed. In addition, the interior of the building was improved including repainting, new security cameras, Internet connections, and new ceiling tiles.

The total cost of the project, including construction and engineering, was $2 million. A $1.1 million Federal Transit Administration grant helped pay for the project. The Depot includes an information service counter, an area to wait for bus transfers, and a place to purchase tickets.
