Districting Commission to Hold Two Public Hearings on Recommended Redistricting Plan

The Sioux Falls Districting Commission will hold public hearings on Thursday, June 15, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 17, 2017, at 10 a.m., both in Carnegie Town Hall, 235 West 10th Street. The first 30 minutes of each hearing will consist of an open house for interested parties to learn more about the recommended plan with the formal public comment portion opening thereafter. The purpose of the hearings is to obtain comments from citizens on the proposed plan to adjust the five City Council district boundaries. This input will be used by the Commission to finalize a redistricting plan for submission to the City Council for final approval.

The current recommended plan for redistricting includes moving:
• Precincts 3-7 and 3-8 from the Northwest District and precinct 1-2 from the Southwest District to the Central District
• Precinct 5-15 from the Central District and precinct 2-4 from the Southeast District to the Northeast District
• Precinct 1-8 from the Southwest District to the Northwest District

“This is an important process that better balances the number of citizens living in each of the five Council districts,” said Jim Fry, Chair of the Districting Commission. “All interested parties should attend one of the two hearings, but those in the affected precincts are specifically encouraged to attend.”

The plan is currently available to the public for inspection and comment at the Office of the City Clerk, Carnegie Town Hall, 235 West Tenth Street. It can also be found online at www.siouxfalls.org/districting-commission.
