The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), formerly the Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS), serves as the nation's inventory of personal travel. It is the only authoritative source of national data on personal travel behavior including purpose of the trip, means of transportation, trip length, day of week and month of the year, number of people on trip, and a host of other trip-making characteristics.
The current survey, the 2001 NHTS, represents the sixth survey in the data series, which started in 1969. Data collection for the 2001 NHTS commenced in March 2001 and was completed in May 2002. The survey is a combined effort of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, who conducts the American Travel Survey of longer distance trips, and the Federal Highway Administration, who collects detailed daily trip making of households. The 2001 survey provides a more complete inventory of travel in the nation.
How is the Sioux Falls Metro Area involved with the NHTS?
The Sioux Falls MPO and the US Department of Transportation/Federal Highway Administration are combining resources to complete additional surveys in conjunction with National Household Travel Survey.
In order for the NHTS to provide statistically accurate estimates for the Sioux Falls MPO, 1,000 additional households, all within the Sioux Falls metro area, will be interviewed for this survey. Fortunately Planning funds through the Federal Highway Administration has allowed this level of sampling. As such, the 2008 NHTS data can used to calculate trip rates and travel statistics specific to our MPO.
