On Friday, May 1, 2009, the City of Sioux Falls began accepting electronics for recycling at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 1015 East Chambers Street.
This is a year-round program and residents are welcome to recycle electronics at the facility during normal hours of operation: Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12 noon. This program is only for residential electronics from citizens of Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties. Commercial, business, government, and institutional electronics will not be accepted. Microwaves and other appliances will not be accepted at this facility. Electronics will not be accepted at the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill.
Citizens are also encouraged to use electronic recycling (stewardship or take-back) programs available from equipment manufacturers or local retail electronic outlets throughout the year. Please check with the manufacturer of your product or a local retail outlet for more specific details on their electronics recycling program.
In 2004, the City banned a specific list of electronics from the landfill, including computers and televisions. Many hazardous substances such as solvents, mercury, lead, chromium, and brominated flame retardants are contained in the banned items.
To date, the City has collected and recycled over two million pounds of residents’ electronics.
