Title: City Debuts Electric Utility Vehicle

The City of Sioux Falls has begun using its first electric utility vehicle, a “green” addition to its fleet that’s expected to improve efficiency and save on fuel costs.

The Chrysler GEM e2 will be used on the City’s Water Reclamation campus to move staff around the facility for maintenance and operational needs. Currently, utility vehicles are powered by diesel fuel. The GEM is 100 percent battery electric and powered by six 12-volt batteries.

When fully charged, the GEM can travel up to 30 miles and reach a top speed of 25 mph. The City estimates the GEM will save $4,700 in its first year and $14,000 over its life.

In addition, the GEM will help with the City’s efforts to be a leader in environmental responsibility. The City will save more than 380 gallons of diesel fuel annually, creating a positive environmental impact through reducing emissions.

For more information and to see the GEM at work, contact Trent Lubbers, Wastewater Superintendent, at 367-8191.
