Title: The Human Relations Commission Announces New Humanitarian Award and Call for Art

—Winning artwork will be awarded to recipient—

The Sioux Falls Human Relations Commission will present a new Humanitarian Award later this year. The recipient will be someone whose work in the area of diversity has left a profound impact on the community.

Human Relations Manager, Jeff Munce, said the Commission is hoping to make this an annual honor.

“The individual who is selected as the 2007 Humanitarian Award recipient will be recognized for a history of unselfish giving or a specific activity having a large impact in other’s lives, particularly centered around encouraging a diverse community,” Munce said.

Today, the Human Relations Commission announces a public call for art to use as the award for this year’s winner. The artwork will be a unique, three dimensional visual art piece and will be mounted on a minimum four inch wide base with an overall height between ten and 18 inches. The Commission will allow some flexibility with this description, but prefers entries fall within the guidelines.

Most importantly, interested artists should create a piece that represents cultural diversity. The Commission is looking for work with broad visual and emotional appeal not specific to one culture. The winning piece will be creative and will make a statement about the sort of person who receives the Humanitarian Award.

Art proposals are due May 1, 2007, and the Commission expects to announce the winning artist in June. Commissioners will release more information about how to nominate someone for the Humanitarian Award later this year.
