Mayor's Biography

Mike Huether tackles each God-given day and motivates others to do the same. No matter the cause, challenge, or role, he works to make a positive difference and memories along the journey.

Best known as “Mayor Mike,” he was sworn in as Mayor of Sioux Falls on May 17, 2010, capturing a dream held since the sixth grade. Soundly re-elected in 2014, he has proven that government can “GET STUFF DONE.” Working together, there is nothing we can’t accomplish.

Mike’s leadership and business skills were honed for 15 years at Citibank in South Dakota, New York, and Texas. In 1999, he was recruited to drive the development efforts of PREMIER Bankcard in Sioux Falls. After ten years, he resigned as Executive Vice President to focus full-time on earning the honor to serve the good people of Sioux Falls. Prior to working in Corporate America, Huether was influenced by mentors at Yankton High School and South Dakota State University, where “Huey’s” Buck and Jack Rabbit blood line was nurtured.

“Uncle Mike” relies on and cherishes his family the most. Cindy, his bride of 31 years, not only is Sioux Falls’ First Lady but also has served in many capacities including as Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Tennis Association. The Huethers were recently honored as the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Family of the Year, and also “South Dakota’s Tennis Hero” by Tennis magazine.

Their daughter, Kylie, and her husband, David, bless them by living and working in Sioux Falls. A new peak was reached when they brought George Owen Kiesner into the family.

In his “spare” time, he squeezes in tennis, running, developing wildlife habitat, hunting, attending potlucks, and creating God-given memories, especially as rambunctious “Grandpa Mike” with George.
